How to Get Lockpicks in Enshrouded: Lockpick and Archaic Lockpick
Lockpicks cost Metal Scraps or Obsidian; Archaic Lockpicks cost Archaic Shards. Both recipes, which is cheaper, and where the materials come from.
Locked chests and doors in Enshrouded take a lockpick, and since 1.0 there are two kinds. The Lockpick opens ordinary locks. The Archaic Lockpick opens the higher-tier ones. Keen’s 1.0 changelog says Archaic locks start in Cinder’s Cradle.
Neither lockpick appears in any loot table in the 1.0 files, so you have to craft them.
Lockpick recipes

Both recipes take either material, so use whichever you have more of. The Blacksmith version costs half as much, so craft in bulk at base and only use the hand recipe when you run out mid-dungeon. Lockpicks stack to 50.
Where Metal Scraps come from
Metal Scraps drop from 30 sources in the 1.0 files: scavenger and skeleton loot, scavenger corpses, scrap cupboards and shelves, and a locked materials chest. You’ll want plenty anyway, since 121 recipes use them. Two of those are the Forge and the Simple Fishing Rod.

The game describes them as “lockpicks exclusively used by the Ancients in their structures and dungeons.” The Ancient Researcher is Loraine Crim, the survivor Keen added in 1.0, “specializing in Ancient knowledge and recipes”. Once she’s at your base, the price per pick halves, just like the Blacksmith recipe.
Where Archaic Shards come from
No recipe makes Archaic Shards. In the loot data they’re in 4 drop tables, and one of them is the corpse container of an Ancient enemy. Archaic Shards are also used in Epic Fishing Bait II, so fishers will want some spare.
Quick plan
- Rescue the Blacksmith early and craft Lockpicks there for 1 scrap each.
- Keep 10 to 20 on you. They stack to 50, so they barely take up space.
- Before Cinder’s Cradle, collect Archaic Shards. Bring the Ancient Researcher home as soon as you can to halve the cost of Archaic Lockpicks.
